Alan Morris

Alan Morris was born in 1932 and and was just 7 years old in 1939 when World War 2 began. His family lived in East Ham and he was evacuated to Great Missenden, Bucks with his sister and dog.

Angela Raven

Angela was aged 7 when the when the war started and lived in Manor Park with her family. She travelled from East Ham station with her haversack and arrived in Paddington with her sister and neighbour Dorothy.

Anna Reeder

Anna Reeder

Anna Reeder was born in 1921 and moved to Britain from Holland in 1937 with her family. She trained with the Red Cross and was placed at Whipps Cross hospital in Leytonstone where she then trained as a nurse.

Charlotte Jones

Charlotte was aged 18 when the Second World War started and was living in Stepney. When Britain and France declared war on Germany she was hop picking in Kent.

Doris Morris

In 1939 Doris was 12 years old and lived in Westminster Gardens, Barking with her widowed mother, older sister and brother. When war was declared she was on holiday in Pitsea, Essex.

Doreen Pyne

Doreen was 14 years old when war was declared. She was evacuated from Lee to Ashford, Kent on the 1st September 1939 with her three brothers.

Elizabeth Blackman

Elizabeth, now 87 years old was aged 22 when the war began and lived with her family in Dagenham. She volunteered for the Land Army and was based in St Albans.

Joyce Bent

Joyce was 17 in 1939. Her father was a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Army. She was in born in Leicester and was there when war was declared.

Jeanne Chandler

Jeanne was only 6 years old when the war began in 1939. She was evacuated from her home in Brixton and went to Sevenoaks where her new host family cut of the children's curly hair.

Joyce Skeels

Joyce was born in 1929 and was aged 10 in 1939 when war was declared. She lived with her family in Barking. The family were warned by Lord Haw Haw that Barking would be bombed.

Mary Becker

Mary was born in 1923 and was 18 years old when the war began. She was evacuated to Aberystwyth. She was able to continue her studies and helped out in the Land Army.

Maudie Scriven

Maudie was called up to the Auxillary Territorial Service (ATS) in 1942 and had basic training as a cook in Yorkshire. She was later stationed at Bedford between two army camps.

Peggy Williams

Peggy was 12 years old when war was declared. She lived in Stoke Newington with her family and was the only one of her family to be evacuated to Letchworth.

Renee Treweek

When the war began Renee was 14 years old. She was evacuated to Swindon and stayed there until 1940. Later her father's company were bombed out of their factory and they were all sent to Yorkshire to work.

Winifred Wilson

Winifred Wilson was aged 13 in 1939. She lived in Hornsey and was supposed to be evacuated but didn't go. She left school in 1940 and worked Barrett's sweet factory in Wood Green.
